Prostate Exams

This exam is typically performed digitally. This means that the doctor who performs the procedure inserts his fingers into the rectum. To perform this the patient must remove garments from the waist down and bend over the exam table. This can be an uncomfortable procedure, and it is normal to feel this way. The doctor then lubricates the fingers; this causes less physical discomfort for the patients. When the doctor is checking the prostate, they are looking for size, shape, lumps, and hard or softness of the prostate.

If caught early, many cases are treatable. However they should not be attempted at home and only by a doctor.
